El miercoles pasado, un grupo de 16 personas y mi persona tuvieron un excelente día durante el Taller de Innovación Digital que dicté en las oficinas de Microsoft en Bogota, Colombia. Para mi, lo mejor fue la interaccion entre los particpantes y tambien entre ellos y mi personas. Fue una experiencia extremadamente enriquezedora asi como estoy seguro que será el siguiente taller.
Todos los dias, me sigue sorprendiendo el nivel de disrupcion (a veces creo que se está acelerando) dentro de cada industria donde competidores nuevos llegan de lugares inesperados como cuando una empresa de computadores (Apple) cambió el negocio de la musica y cuando una empresa de envio de DVDs por correo fisico (Netflix) cambió la industria de cable. Durante el taller, miramos estos y muchos mas ejemplos y discutimos las implicaciones para el negocio de cada cliente. Asistieron participantes de empresas como Colmedica, Banco de Bogota, Belcorp, Legis, Intergrupo, Federación de Cafeteros y otros.
Finalmente, hicisimos tres ejercicios interactivos y estimulantes para que todos pudieran salir del taller con las herramientas necesarias para repensar sus propios negocios mientras colaboren con otras personas para proactivamente anticipar innovaciones y diseñar nuevos modelos de negocio. Realmente fue un increible grupo de personas y les doy las gracias para sus conversaciones estimulantes y la energía y passión con la cual se desempeñaron durante esta experiencia de aprendizaje.
Last Wednesday, a group of 16 people and myself had an excellent time during the Digital Innovation Workshop that I directed at Microsoft’s offices in Bogota, Colombia. For me, the best part was the interaction between the participants as well as between them and myself. It was a truly rewarding experience as I’m sure the next workshops will be also.
Each day, I’m astonished by the continual disruption happening in industry after industry where new competitors pop up from unexpected places in the same way that a computer company (Apple) disrupted the music business and the way that DVD rental-by-mail company (Netflix) disrupted the cable business. We looked at these and many more examples and discussed the implications for each particpants’ businesses. Participants came from companies such as Colmedica, Banco de Bogota, Belcorp, Legis, Intergrupo, Federacion de Cafeteros and others.
Finally, we ran through three interactive and stimulating exercises so that everyone would leave the workshop with the necessary tools to start rethinking their own businesses and collaborating with colleagues on how to proactively anticipate innovations in their own industry and innovate with new business models. It was truly a great group of people and I thank them for the stimulating discussions and the energy and passion that they put into this unique learning experience.
La semana pasada tuve la oportunidad de hablar en el evento de Microsoft para sus partners (socios de negocio). El evento se ejecuto en el nuevo hotel JW Marriott acá en Bogota el cuál quedó muy bien. Cuando me contaron que mi conferencia era el ultimo antes del cocktail, pense en mi cabeza que lo mas seguro es que habrian dos o tres asistentes.
Fue una sorpresa cuando el salón se llenó y tengo que decir que disfruté inmensamente la interaccion con la audiencia y las preguntas y los comentarios (algunos partners ya están avanzados en vender soluciones basados en cloud computing). Fue gratificante ver el interés que ahora está generando este tema lo cual es muy diferencia al momento que escribi un articulo para La Republica sobre dicho tema.
Mi premisa es que el tema de Cloud Computing tiene un componente técnico pero, para mi, el componente mas retante (e interesante) es el tema de negocios. Los clientes deberían entender las ventajas competitivas de adoptar soluciones basados en esta tecnologia (Ej. agilidad, colaboracion, etc.) al igual que los proveedores (la audiencia). Esta es la conversacion que me interesa y que estaré exponiendo en por lo menos tres conferencias que ya tengo agendadas para diferentes entidades interesadas en fomentar la conversacion alrededor de la innovacion digital y, en particular, cloud computing.
Last week, I finished one of my SaaS workshops. Eight people registered (from four companies) to learn about SaaS models that have worked, different options of revenue streams and use new tools to get to a concrete set of actions to execute and develop a SaaS offering with much more chance of success.
Some of the quotes from the attendees: “The workshop confirmed to me that my understanding that continuous innovation in business is a reality”, “We now have tools to create a solid SaaS plan”, “We learned a ton!”, “The workshop allowed us to plan everything we need to plan,”the learnings from the workshop will allow us to convert our abstract ideas to concrete plans,”we now have new ideas for SaaS initiatives which we never had planned.”
In Latin America, Venture Capital is still scarce for startups, so there’s a big chance that the trailblazers will come from existing companies with profitable revenue streams. Nevertheless, there are already startups (such as JoinCube) that are off and running with their initiatives. This workshop is designed to get the group learning from each other and provides some conceptual models for team members to exchange ideas in order to, first, develop an original plan and, secondly, to iterate or “pivot” quickly as the project starts to take flight.
I will be giving this workshop in Colombia and then in other countries. There are two versions of the workshop. One is focused on developing SaaS offerings. The other is for employees of large companies in Latin America interested in taking advantage of digital innovation and understanding how, as John Hagel espouses in his white paper on the “Shift Index”, digital technologies are transforming industries such as banking, retail, tourism and media. Participants will make use of new tools to develop innovation initiatives for their companies while becoming literate on the “new world” that has come into being through digital technologies.
La semana pasada tuve el honor de dictar un taller para empresas que quieren crear nuevas ofertas basadas en la modalidad de software como servicio o SaaS (sus siglas en ingles). Cuatro empresas se registraron y Microsoft impulsó la iniciativa.
Muchas empresas de software y nuevos startups estan buscando implmentar modelos SaaS y posicionarsen con innovación digital en el mercado. Sin embargo, hay algunas nuevas competencias sin las cuales se incrementa el riesgo de invertir miles y miles de dolares en esfuerzos de desarrollo, mercadeo y ventas sin ningun resultado notable. Con este taller de 24 horas logramos subir substancialmente dichas competencias y aumentar substancialmente las probabilidades de éxito.
Analizamos casos de exito SaaS y estudiamos las mejores practicas para generar ingresos y medir el progreso de las iniciativas SaaS. Sin embargo, el reto mas grande para empresas tradicionales de software y startups es dedicir en la oferta que deberán crear. Para esto, introdujimos varias herramientas que permitieron a los asistentes dialogar y analizar las diferentes opciones. Tuvimos ejercicios en grupo con un ejemplo hipotetico y luego cada empresa (con dos participantes) trabajaron su propia iniciativa de SaaS. Fue bastante interactivo y todos aprendieron del grupo al igual que del instructor.
Especificamente, medimos cinco competencias importantes como la del conocimiento sobre como una empresa o proyecto SaaS debería medir el exito dia a dia. Los participantes se auto evaluaron (antes y despues del taller) en 5 competencias claves para lanzar una iniciativa exitosa SaaS. Esta incluyeron: conocimiento sobre modelos de negocio SaaS exitosos, conocimiento de herramientas para analizar nuevos modelos de negocio, conocimiento sobre las opciones para generar ingresos, conocimiento sobre el mercadeo Internet para empresas SaaS y, finalmente, conocimiento sobre las metricas para medir una iniciativa SaaS en el dia a dia. En esta ultima, los asistentes se habia calificado (en promedio) con un conocimiento basico de 2 puntos (donde 10 puntos es alto conocimiento) con las otras competencias calificadas menos que cinco. Al final del taller, sin embargo, todas las competencias estaban auto evaluadas en 9 sobre 10.
Este taller se volverá a dictar con el patrocinio de Microsoft. Adicionalmente, hay otra version del taller para empresas de todas las industrias que buscan aprovechar los cambios generados por herramientas digitales en industrias como la banca, los medios, publicidad, turismo, el comercio y otros. Como dice John Hagel en su whitepaper reciente, las empresas de todas las industrias que aprovechen la innovacion digital son mas rentables. En dicho taller de 24 horas, se hablará de diferentes industrias y su transformacion y se enseñarán a utilizar herramientas para crear innovacion digital en su propia industria.

Por mi parte, voy a hablar sobre un evento donde me desempeñe de nuevo como juez de una competencia. Esta vez, junto con otros jueces, calificamos unos proyectos de directivos de Universidades para crear iniciativas de fomento de startups. Daré mis impresiones sobre lo que vi. Tambien hablare de unos articulos que escribi en VentureBeat sobre una empresa impresionante Isrealita que tiene un software para manejar campañas de Google, sobre una adquisicion por parte de Adobe y, finalmente, otro sobre una reunion que sostuvo Microsoft con analistas de inversion.
Estoy seguro que Thomas tendrá unos temas interesantes y, mejor que eso, estoy seguro que tendremos un buen debate sobre cualquier punto o tema que la audiencia nos manda. Así que piensan en algun tema sobre el cual tienen mucho interes y/o una opinion fuerte. Vamos a intentar poner a funcionar Skype (usando el ID tropicalgringo) por si acaso le pedimos a alguien que nos llame para dialogar entonces por favor tengan su Skype listo.
Ya ha pasado mas de un mes despues de la serie de conferencias que dicté sobre Cloud Computing durante los eventos de Microsoft Live en Bogota, Cali y Medellin. Durante las ultimas semanas he podido analizar mas el mercado Colombiano y realizar un inventario con respecto a ofertas sobre la nube. Lo que he visto es que hay pocos proveedores soluciones de software (ISVs) en el pais con su propia oferta de Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Sin embargo, si hay varios proveedores utilizando la nube para ofrecer soluciones de codigo abierto o de otros proveedores.
Gracias a las consultorias que estoy haciendo en el momento para empresas de software locales, veo un gran interes en desarrollar ofertas SaaS para el mercado Colombiano, latino y global. Sin embargo, por la gran cantidad de opciones que se pueden escoger, las empresas de software estan buscando asesoria en como proceder. Definitivamente, desarrollar una oferta solida de SaaS requiere mas que simplemente alojar la misma clase de solucion en la nube.
Presiento que este sera un año muy interesante no solo por el trabajo que estoy adelantando con mis clientes actuales sino tambien por el potencial con algunos nuevos clientes que estan por cerrar. Mi objetivo es asegurar que cada cliente comprenda el gran potencial de esta nueva tecnologia y sus implicaciones comerciales.
It’s been more than a month since my series of conferences on Cloud Computing at Microsoft’s Live events in Medellin, Cali and Bogota, Colombia. During the past few weeks, I’ve been able to do more reconnoissance of the market’s readiness for these offerings. What I’ve found is that there are very few local ISVs with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings, but quite a few players are offering open source and other third party software hosted on the cloud.
Additionally, from my own clients (software companies) and others, I’ve seen keen interest in developing new offerings leveraging the cloud. Nevertheless, there are many options and much confusion as to how to proceed. Developing a solid SaaS solution takes a lot more than simply hosting on the cloud and that is where the true opportunity to differentiate your software company lay.
This is going to be quite an interesting year and I am going to have the opportunity to help my current clients and some new ones that should be hiring me soon. My objective is to have each client understand the power of a SaaS offering and to set a clear objective for the same.
Hace una semana y media tuve la oportunidad de ser juez en la competencia de Microsoft llamado Imagine Cup. Fue excelente poder ver como de innovadores estaban los equipos de Colombia aplicando su dedicacion a ayduar a personas necesitadas. Como es usual durante estos eventos no solo fue gratificante conocer a los participantes sino tambien el poder interactuar con mis colegas en el panel de juezes.
Debatimos entre nosotros los meritos y debilidades de los diferentes grupos. Yo tenia un grupo favorito por su manera innovadora de aplicar una mejor distribucion de informacion confiable al problema de la pobreza. Tristemente, este grupo tuvo problemas durante su demostracion y la presentacion no estuvo tan pulida como la de otros. Al final, entregamos el premio a un grupo con una presentacion pulida y software bien ejecutado. Me hubiera encantado si dicho grupo hubiera podido asesorar a mi grupo favorito y si hubieran podido ir a Polonia juntos pero estoy seguro que el grupo ganador representara excelentemente a Colombia!
A week and a half ago, I had the pleasure of judging a number of entrepreneurial initiatives for Microsoft’s Imagine Cup competition. It was great to see how innovative and dedicated Colombia’s youth can be to creating great technology while helping out the needy. As usually happens during these events, it is a truly enjoyable experience not only to meet these youths, but also to meet and get to know my fellow judges.
We debated the merits and weaknesses of the different competitors. I had a favorite that tried to solve an important problem (poverty) by applying better information design. Unfortunately, they had some snafus with their presentation and demo and I was unable to vote for them as the winner. We ended up giving the final prize to a sharp group with an incredibly polished presentation and they will be traveling to Poland to represent Colombia. I wish we could have had the winning team train the other team to be more polished and to finish off their software as I think it would have been an excellent presentation in Poland. Nevertheless, I’m sure the winners will do a great job!
Que dia tan increible. Acabo de hablar con un viejo colega de mi primer trabajo. Hace mas de 20 años que no habia hablado con esta persona. Ambos trabajabamos para un contratista para el departamento de defensa de EEUU como Ingenieros Electricos (inmediatamente despues de la universidad) y ninguno de nosotros estabamos muy emocionados con nuestros trabajos. Sin embargo, si disfrutamos mucho el hecho que nuestra empresas, llamada HRB-Singer y basada en Pennsylvania, nos envio a California con todo pago.
Aunque no lo pasábamos mucho juntos, nos respectábamos y por nuestros lados disfrutamos mucho nuestra estadía en California y ambos terminamos viviendo allí después de irnos de esa empresa. Increiblemente, ambos terminamos en la misma industria y una muy diferente a la que estabamos. Estamos ambos enfocados en el mercadeo por Internet. Fue tan nostalgico hablar de nuevo con Gary, escuchar lo que esta haciendo el ahora y recordar algunas situaciones chisotosas de esa vieja epoca.
Por otro lado, hoy llegue de Cali de una conferencia que dicte en un evento de Microsoft sobre Cloud Computing. Disfrute eso y me dicen que en Medellin y Bogota, los eventos deben ser mas concurridos. Finalmente, acabo de llegar de una excelente conversación con un verdadero experto en ejecución de campañas online. Fuera de esto es una persona muy agradable y tiene ideas super estimulantes. Finalmente, no hay como llegar de un viaje y ver a la familia. Cada dia los hijos estan mas maduros y grandes y mi esposa mas bella. Fuera de que siento asi, de pronto me gano unos puntos si ella lea estas frases (oops, acabo de perder esos puntos).
Man, what an amazing day. A few hours ago, I got off the phone with a colleague from my first job out of college. A guy I had last spoken with more than 20 years ago! We were both Advanced Design engineers for a defense contractor called HRB-Singer straight out of college and were not at all into our jobs. Incredibly enough, we both ended up focusing on online marketing.
Man, my life is so different right now than what it was then. I was this young whipper snapper on the prowl and without any ties. Who woulda thunk it. Back then, working was a hobby since I wasn’t really putting so much effort into my tasks (I’m ashamed to say) and was just soaking up a ton of life experiences. Gary (that’s his name) and I ended up getting a gig in California (we were based out of State College, PA) and we were loving life out there. The company set us up with great cars and amazing apartments and we really enjoyed our time out there. The only thing we weren’t too crazy about was the work we were doing (or not doing).
It seems that Gary, got into graphic design and become Creative Director for a number of interactive agencies and has been working as a consultant for some time and has made a nice home in Denver. It really took me back today talking with him and remembering those times. It really made me think about the journey I’ve had during the past 20 years when I lived for 5 years out there in California and then have spent the last 15 years here in Colombia. Pretty wild.
Also, today I just got back from Cali where I gave a presentation on Cloud Computing at an event sponsored by Microsoft. It was interesting, but expect the events in Medellin (next week) and Bogota to be a bit more active. Well, time to do some work and hit the hay. I also had a great conversation this evening with an amazing online marketer who’s based here in Colombia, but who’s done amazing things in the US market. There’s some real talent down here.
