  • Once again, will Amazon buy Twitter?

Amazon-TwitterAlmost 10 years ago, I sent an opinion piece to an online magazine called VentureBeat.  Though I cringe, now, at my writing style (e.g., ambiguous and, at times, convoluted grammar), I still believe that the principle idea makes sense: Amazon should buy Twitter.

For some reason, the title ended up talking about a “partnership.”  Nonetheless, my thesis had to do with taking advantage of Amazon’s (and AWS’) operational “chops” so that anyone leading Twitter could focus on its strategic value.  The additional value of connecting AWS developers with one more (or several) Twitter API’s within the same infrastructure would also be of great benefit.  I still see synergies here, particularly as AI generated tweet engines continue to proliferate.

  • Digital Transformation Up Close and Personal

Openpay-officeA year ago, I joined the New Digital Business group within BBVA, a large global bank actively transforming its business. Several weeks ago, we publicly announced the acquisition of digital payments startup Openpay, the culmination of a project that myself and a great boss within said business unit worked on during the last year. I’m looking forward to the huge impact that Openpay (see filtered photo of HQ above) and its impressive founders, Roberto Bargagli, Eric Núñez and Heber Lazcano will have on BBVA’s digital business.

I’m actually writing this post from Queretaro, where this company is headquartered and I have the good fortune to work with them as part of BBVA. Finding and acquiring a high-quality startup such as Openpay speaks to the opportunities (particularly, in terms of acquisitions – only one tool) available for digital transformation in Latin America. I’d like to use this post to share some general opinions about digital innovation and the ensuing business transformations that corporations are going through as well as some insights about the Latin American startup scene.

  • TropicalGringo Portfolio: Tappsi exit good news for ecosystem

Tappsi ExitAs some of you know, one of the startups that I advise is Tappsi, the leading taxi-hailing company in Colombia. Recently, the company announced their merger with Easy Taxi.  Not only is this a good outcome for the company’s talented founders, shareholders (such as myself) and the Colombian startup ecosystem (particularly, for investors and potential investors), but it is a logical next step in the company’s evolution and allows it to play the long (regional) game as part of bigger company.

Though this outcome may have been a surprise to some, it was a scenario that the founders (and myself) always saw as one of several probabilities down the road. This space was quite obviously destined for consolidation (especially, from a regional perspective).  In such a market, as many know, you can be the consolidator of several markets (countries) or, if you can build dominance in one lucrative market (country), you can, later, join forces with that same consolidator through a merger, acquisition, etc.

  • Adobe Switches from Checkers to Chess

Yesterday’s announcement concerning Adobe’s acquisition of Omniture signifies the first salvo in a race to establish leadership in what the company calls an “integrated workflow—with optimization capabilities embedded in the creation tools.”  It’s clear that Adobe’s digital innovation vision is to redefine the process of the creation and deployment of digital iniciatives.

According to Forrester, the market for Web Analytics is set to grow at a CAGR of 17% reaching almost $1B by 2014.  The company foresees a market where analytics and optimization solutions are embedded within marketing applications.  Apparently, Adobe believes this is the case and yesterday embarked on a road to make this vision a reality.
